Bandhani is a form of resist dyeing, similar to Shibori. The pattern is formed of small dots - which are made by tying thread tightly around a small part of the scarf's fabric. Each dot is hand tied. The fabric is then dyed. Once the fabric has dried, the dyer "pops" the fabric -- tugging the fabric from left to right. All of the threads holding the pattern, pop off of the scarf. Thus, revealing the pattern.
All scarves depicted are designed and produced by Jabbar Khatri. He is a master dyer and has won awards for his use of natural dyes and for his unique patterning. He is part of a community who has done this type of dyeing for hundreds of years. He lives in Kutch, India, a region known for their exquisite textiles.
