Learn to Spin on a Drop Spindle
Instructor: Michael Wade

In this class, you will learn spinning related vocab, learn to spin on a drop spindle, and gain an introduction to plying. By the time you are through with class, you will be well on your way to creating your own handspun yarn. We have Schacht top whorl drop spindles available for $18.00 Note: This class has changed format and is now being offered as a 1 time, 3 hour class.

PHASE 2 DROP SPINNING CLASSES



Drop Spindle Tricks, Tips, and Techniques
Instructor: Michael Wade

Over the course of 3 hours, Michael will teach you how to spin more effectively and efficiently on your drop spindle. This is a great class if you have just taken the intro to drop spinning class and would like to continue brushing up on your skills - or you learned to drop spindle some time ago, and would like to get back into it. Plus, we have decided to offer this class a la carte. Jump in and choose what specifically interests you - or - spend the afternoon with Michael and learn the gamut. All materials included in price of class.

Prereq: Intro to Drop Spinning class or 10 hours practice.

Lab 1: Achieve a Worsted and Woolen Spun Yarn
There is more than 1 way to spin a yarn, and Michael will show you how. Moreover, different styles of spinning creates different types of yarn. Learn why one type of yarn is more suitable for say socks than scarves.

Lab 2: Explore ways to manage your fiber supply
One of the biggest tricks to spinning more efficently on your drop spindle is learning how to manage your fiber and your newly spun yarn. Michael will teach you how to you your hands and arms to create an even longer yarn, and then too wind it on your spindle. He will also teach you how wind your yarn onto your spindle so you can wind as much possible yardage onto your spindle.

Lab 3: Expand your knowledge of Joining and Plying
Are frayed joins getting in your way? Learn and practice creating smooth joins. In addition to the various spinning draws, there are also a number of ways to ply, learn about them, and learn how you like to ply best. Plying methods covered: center pull ball, andean plying, and more.

Navajo Plying
Instructor: Michael Wade

Learn to ply in an ingenious way that will open your eyes to possibility of plied yarn. Navajo plying also known as chain plying is a way to create a 3-ply yarn where one spins a length of yarn, then instantly plies back on that length of yarn. Therefore, once you are finished spinning, you are truly finished - moreover, your product is an amazing 3-ply, handspun yarn. Michael is one of the very few who have perfected this craft. This is a great opportunity to learn this rare technique.

Spinning Silk on a Drop Spindle with an Emphasis on Silk Bells

Learn to successfully spin silk bells on a drop spindle. Silk comes in a variety of forms for spinning; one of them being in a bell shape. If you've ever tried spinning from a bell, you may know this technique can be very tricky. Michael Wade has tips and tricks to share making spinning from silk bells an enjoyable experience - plus, you will walk away with beautiful, handspun yarn.

Drop Spindle Fiber Tasting: Targhee to Baby Camel and Everything in Between

Fiber tastings provide a great way to dive unabashed into the amazing variety of fibers available to spinners. Michael will guide you through the tasting, explaining the different nuances of each fiber, and give you tips about spinning each type of fiber.
