Spinning Dream Team
Instructor: Kristine Vejar
In each class, we will focus upon one type of fiber, an example would be Blue-faced Leicester combed top. Each class, we will evaluate that class’s chosen fiber’s staple length and elasticity. In each class, you will spin a total of 4 distinctly different yarns: worsted 2 ply, worsted 3 ply, semi-woolen 2 ply, semi-woolen 3 ply. In class, you will be given enough fiber to create 4x4” knit samples from your 4 yarns. Your homework will be to knit these samples. Also, you will be gives worksheets in order to record your findings. At the beginning of each class, we will spend a few minutes going through everyone’s knit samples so we can learn from one another. The goal is to create a portfolio of your work that you can refer back to as you create future, project specific yarns. From these classes, you will develop a keen sense of which types of spun yarns you are drawn to, an intrinsic understanding of how your wheel works, a full grasp on both kinds of spinning draws (short forward and over the fold) and develop an inherent sense of how to spin any yarn that you wish.
Prereq: Attended an Intro to Spinning class, practiced spinning for 20-30 hours, and have a working knowledge of 2 styles of drafting: over the fold, long draw and worsted, short forward draw.
If you need to practice drafting before class, we are currently offering drafting labs which are 1.5 hours long and $15.
Tools Needed: Spinning wheel, 4 empty bobbins, lazy kate, and niddy noddy.
This class is for wheel spinners only (I’m sorry spindlers! Come over to the dark side.) There may be a possibility for wheel rental during class, please contact me for further details. Sunday, February 7th, 12-3p, Yak-Silk
