Intro to Dye Gardening

In this class, you will learn about various dye plants you can grow in your own backyard. We will focus on the elements needed for successful gardening. This one hour class will discuss the types of plants you can use to dye fiber, the types of gardening techniques available, soil conditions, lighting and watering, pests and diseases, and last but not least how to plant your seeds.
This is a lecture class with the option to buy dye seeds after class to get a jump start!

Intro to Natural Dyes - Phase 1 Dyeing
Instructor: Kristine Vejar
In this class, you will learn how to do every step involved in creating naturally dyed yarn and fiber: weighing, mordanting, dyeing, and washing. Our focus in this class will be upon natural dye extracts from plants such as madder, pomegranate, logwood, and more. This class is a prerequisite for all future Phase 2 Dyeing classes. (Three classes total)

Vat Dyeing with Indigo - Phase 2 Dyeing

Indigo is a dye with a complete and utter history onto itself. One could spend an entire lifetime on the study and practice of indigo dyeing. In order for indigo to permanently dye fiber, it must go through a reduction
process where the oxygen is taken out of the indigo bath. In this class, you will learn about the history of indigo, how an indigo vat is made, how to reduce the indigo vat, and you will dye fiber with indigo.
Prereq: Intro to Natural Dyes
